Life Insurance and the King of Rock N' Roll

There are life insurance policies and then there are life insurance policies.

Imagine the policy taken out for Elvis Presley, who passed away in 1977. Much to the amazement of some, reports continue more than 30 years later that the "King' never really died.

The claims mainly point to the fact that Elvis faked his death in order to go into hiding for a number of reasons.

Over time there have been a number of reported Elvis sightings. Is it urban legend or not?

One report in a book, Elvis' DNA Proves He's Alive, Bill Beeny claims he conducted DNA testing on a pair of tissues of Presley, one of the singer when he was alive, and one on the reported dead body. According to Beeny, the pair did not match, therefore coming to the conclusion that the death may have been faked.

Another theory that has been passed about is that a wax body of Elvis was actually placed in the coffin, not the real Elvis. So how would this charge actually be proven?

Backers of the wax body theory point to several notions:

  1. Elvis' custom-made coffin weighed 900 pounds. Funeral attendants claim that the air around the coffin was especially cool, leading to the possibility that there was a built-in AC unit to keep a wax body cool;
  2. Elvis reportedly weighed around 250 pounds when he died. The death certificate said he weighed 170 pounds, leading to more backing of the wax body theory.
  3. A couple of hours following the public announcement of Elvis' death, a man who reportedly resembled Elvis bought a plane ticket for Argentina under the name of John Burrows, an alias Elvis had taken on a number of occasions, and one that was noted in government documents.
  4. Less than a week prior to his death, Elvis phoned a female friend who went by the name of Miss Foster to inform her he had canceled his upcoming tour and that she should not believe any reports she would hear about him. A polygraph test indicated she was not lying.
  5. All pictures taken at the death scene have mysteriously disappeared, as have the toxicology reports.
  6. Finally, to this day, no one has ever come forward to collect Elvis' life insurance policy.

So, is this a real mystery or urban legend?
